Latest update: 8:42 PM CDT on Sunday, April 13, 2014
April 13, 2014:
It was an exciting and memorable visit to St. Martin, St. Thomas, and Castaway Cay during
the past week, and I have photos available on the new
Eastern Caribbean page. While
the impetus for the voyage was sad, the fun our group of seven had was amazing.
August 3, 2013:
Just a quick update to add some photos from yesterday's hike to the
Day Trips page. Also, last week I visited the Corner
Pub in my hometown of Reedsburg, and that's in the Beer Table.
July 21, 2013:
No idea why it takes so long for me to get around to updating my site, but I think that
I probably need to work on speeding up my photo selection and captioning skills!
I have finally posted pictures from the three overnight trips I've taken in 2013.
In March, there was my usual trip to
Washington, DC, where in addition
to my Senate Youth Alumni duties I had a chance to walk around the Tidal Basin and shoot some
photos. In April, I went to Mishicot
in northeastern Wisconsin, and did some hiking along Lake Michigan and visited Green Bay and
Lambeau Field. Then, this month, I returned to
Mercer in northern Wisconsin
and hiked, boated, and enjoyed some time away. Of course, there were also beer visits along
the way since last September, chronicled in the Beer Table.
September 16, 2012:
It's been a while since I've updated my site, but I haven't been hiking for a little while.
That's because I ended up jamming my right little toe into my kitchen table, which made hiking
more or less an exercise in pain that I wasn't interested in pursuing. I do have a couple of
hiking photo sets posted on the Day Trips page, of both
my last trip before my mishap and after today's great hike at Lake Kegonsa. But, there was more
going on with me in the last few weeks, and from September 12 to 14 I was in
New York for a Senate Youth Alumni
event. When you give me two days in a city, I'll make the most of them, and I did two walking
tours and an "explore on my own" in addition to my Thursday night event. Definitely an interesting
month!
August 7, 2012:
After a long day at work, I needed a good break so I headed to Lake Kegonsa to get some
light hiking in. Photos are on the Day Trips page.
August 5, 2012:
Today was a beautiful day, and since I had to check on a cable modem issue at our
Lake Delton store, I figured I may as well get in some hiking at Mirror Lake State Park.
I have some photos from my hike on the Day Trips page.
After my work was done, I made a stop at the Moosejaw to have a couple of beers and dinner.
Of course, that's on the Beer Table.
August 4, 2012:
The past month has been brutally busy at work, and finally today I was able to take some
time (during a rain storm, no less) to put together the photos from some of my July and
early August hikes. Those are available on the Day Trips
page. However, all work and no play makes Dave a somewhat thirsty boy, and that meant that
I had three brewpub visits during the last month as well, which are of course listed in
the Beer Table.
July 8, 2012:
I paid a second visit to the Black Hawk Unit of the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway, this
time hitting the trails in the southern part of the park. A few pictures are on the
Day Trips page.
July 7, 2012:
July has started out with a lot of heat...and a few adventures. There are a couple of
photos from recent trips to New Glarus Woods and Donald Park on the
Day Trips page. My friend Eric was in town,
and we visited Madison's newest brewery, One Barrel Brewing, as its doors opened for the first
time ever at 4:00 on July 6. That, plus a stop at the downtown Great Dane for dinner, are the
two most recent additions to the Beer Table.
July 1, 2012:
I tried a new hiking trail just outside of Palmyra, in the Kettle Moraine State
Forest. Pictures are on the Day Trips page.
June 28, 2012:
I returned to Brooklyn State Wildlife Area for the second time this season, and it's
a lot drier than it was when I visited only three weeks ago. Some pictures are on
the Day Trips page.
June 26, 2012:
It was a great night for my third visit of the season to Blue Mound State Park, and some
quick snapshots are on the Day Trips page.
June 24, 2012:
My last four hikes at Natural Bridge, New Glarus Woods, Donald Park, and Horicon Marsh are
on the Day Trips page.
June 14, 2012:
Some pictures from a quick hike at Indian Lake County Park are on the
Day Trips page.
June 13, 2012:
I was out hiking tonight and I've posted pictures from Blue Mound State Park on the
Day Trips page. Also I had important business at the
Grumpy Troll yesterday, and that visit is listed in the Beer Table.
June 11, 2012:
Surprisingly, I haven't been visiting too many brewpubs since my trip up north. However,
I have been getting out and hiking--and taking a few pictures. I've posted photos from my
first twelve hikes of the season on the Day Trips page.
May 12, 2012:
You know it's bad when I have to take a vacation in order to organize vacation photos for
this web site, but finally I'm caught up. In addition to the requisite changes to the
Beer Table, I have vacation photos spanning trips from
October 2011 onward:
I'd hate to make any promises about keeping up to date, but I did rewrite the engine that builds
my photo pages so it is theoretically easier to maintain. For those in the know among you I now
use the sfYaml parser, and define the photos and their captions in YAML files. Please drop
me a line if you see anything crazy in the newest pages listed above; they use a strange hybrid
of PHP and SSI and are mostly a bridge to rewriting the entire site in PHP in the future.
December 1, 2011:
I'm horribly behind in updating this website, and today I decided to have a crack
at making at least a couple of changes. I'm actually on vacation in Arizona as I post, after
having had trips to Kentucky in May
and to the Caribbean in October (pictures pending). Of course, there are several additions to
the Beer Table; at least that is up to date now!
April 30, 2011:
After a week of low-speed Internet access, I'm finally able to post my
Washington, DC pages, and now that
I've completed my stay in the Brainerd Lakes area, I've got
Minnesota photos available as well.
And of course, there were a couple of edits to the Beer Table.
April 24, 2011:
It's strange that it takes a vacation to cause me to build a section for a different vacation,
but that's what happened today. Right now I'm in Breezy Point, Minnesota, and I spent a little
piece of the afternoon putting together photos from my trip to
Washington, DC in March. Of course,
I also had to play catch-up on the Beer Table.
January 26, 2011:
It's been forever since I've updated my vacation and beer pages, though I think that has more
to do with being generally busy with non-vacation things than anything else. Today, a snowstorm
canceled my plans to return from New York to Madison, so I had a chance to crank away on several
vacation pages. Back in October, I made a trip to the general area of Mercer, Wisconsin, and those
photos are in my Wisconsin 2010 pages.
Just this past week, I visited both Boston and New York, and plenty of photos are available on my
East Coast 2011 pages. And, not
surprisingly, I've had a few entries to make in the Beer Table.
May 2, 2010:
My vacation in South Carolina
came to an end yesterday. Today I finally had a chance to post the last pictures worth posting
from the trip, including a visit to Bald Head Island in North Carolina, and my trip to Charleston
this past Friday. In Charleston, I also had a chance to get a beer at the Southend Brewery, and links
as usual are in the Beer Table.
April 28, 2010:
I've got more pictures on my South Carolina
travel page, including a trip to Congaree National Park just outside of Columbia. I've also been fairly
active on the brewpub front, visits which as usual are in the Beer Table.
April 26, 2010:
I'm on vacation in South Carolina, and over
the last few days I've visited three brewpubs and done some light hiking in the low country. It's been
a strange transition to vacation, but so far it's shaping up well. So long as the alligators stay away,
that is.
March 10, 2010:
Over the last couple of days, I've had a breakfast, a luncheon, and a reception to attend, but in my
off time I visited the National Museum of Crime and Punishment for the first time, and the National
Museum of American History for probably the tenth time. All of that is on the
Washington, DC page. I also snuck in a visit
to the District Chophouse, which is recorded in the Beer Table.
March 8, 2010:
Today was my day to tour the Capitol in
Washington, DC, thanks to Senator Feingold's
office. I especially enjoyed watching speeches on the floor of the Senate for a couple of hours.
March 7, 2010:
I'm finally on a trip, and this time I'm in
Washington, DC for the United States Senate Youth
Alumni Association's 12th Annual Alumni Weekend and the 48th Annual United States Senate Youth Program.
Today was the first day I had some time to myself, and I went for a walk to the National Mall and visited
the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Air & Space Museum, and the Hirshhorn Sculpture
Garden before heading off to an early dinner, that of course included an addition to the
Beer Table.
July 26, 2009:
I'm back in Madison and made the final minor tweaks to the
Road Trip 2009 pages, including
the addition of high-resolution versions of the pictures. (Just click on the picture to have it
open in a new window at 1024x768 resolution.) I drove more than 2,450 miles and hiked more than
40 miles. It was a good trip, but it will be nice to drive a little less for a while!
July 25, 2009:
Road Trip 2009 is coming to a
close. Tonight I'm in Mankato, Minnesota, after visiting the Jeffers Petroglyphs site and the
Schell Brewery in southwest Minnesota. Of course, as part of visiting Schell, I had to sample
the beer at the end of the tour...which of course necessitated yet another update to the
Beer Table.
July 24, 2009: I'm in Mitchell, South Dakota, home of the famous Corn Palace, and
I finally had a chance to post yesterday and today's photos in the
Road Trip 2009 section. My visits
to Crow Peak (the peak itself, not the brewery), Badlands National Park, and Minuteman National
Historic Site were great fun. And, on Thursday, I made two brewery visits—a return to
Firehouse Brewing in Rapid City, and a return to Crow Peak in Spearfish. Links are in the
Beer Table.
July 22, 2009: Today I made the trip from North Dakota to South Dakota, with a stop
in Wyoming to see Devil's Tower National Monument for the second time. Pictures from that hike,
which covered most of the trail system in the monument, are on the
Road Trip 2009 page. Following
a hike, what better activity than to visit the taproom of a brewery—and Crow Peak Brewing Company in
Spearfish, SD, was my destination. The IPA was a little different (much more malt than I
would expect) but the porter was a chocolatey, earthy indulgence that tasted good even
on a hot day. As usual a link is in the Beer Table.
July 21, 2009: It's my second day in western North Dakota, and I made a return trip
to Theodore Roosevelt National Park to do some hiking. Unfortunately, I didn't do as much
hiking as I'd like--the mud tried to suck me down, and that's not my idea of a good time. There's
a new set of photos on the
Road Trip 2009 page.
July 20, 2009: Today, I traveled from Fargo to Theodore Roosevelt National Park,
which was quite a drive. It was worth it, though. The badlands of North Dakota are an impressive
sight, and getting out and hiking in the park was a great experience with plenty of animals on
and near the trail to keep me alert. Photos are on my
Road Trip 2009 page.
July 19, 2009: I'm on vacation again! This time, it's a road trip through Minnesota
and the Dakotas. I stayed with my brother's family in the Twin Cities on July 18, and after a
drive through Minnesota today (and a stop to hike at Maplewood State Park), I'm now in Fargo, ND.
I've sampled the IPA at the local Granite City, and I've even started a new travel page. The brewpub
visit is logged on the Beer Table, and the new travel section starts
at my Road Trip 2009
page.
July 14, 2009: It's been more than a year since I've last made an update to this site.
To make a long story endless, I had to go on vacation in order to figure out what to do about the
dependency this site had on Apache 1.3. That dependency is gone...though the site does require
Apache 2.x now. It's not the ground-up rewrite I wanted to do, but to do that right I'll really
have to get pretty deep into PHP, and possibly even code it with the symfony framework (which we use at work).
As it is, the beer table is now powered by two PHP files and two text files instead of being a
collection of 200+ SHTML files that were included every time the page was requested. Even that small
rewrite opens a lot of possiblities for presenting information about the breweries I've visited, including
sort capabilities or "view by brewery" or possibly some other fun things. If something has broken, please
let me know--keep hitting the refresh button until you get a survey form on the right side, and I'll
do my best to figure out what's going on. I've been a couple of places since my last post, but I haven't
had time to touch up and caption the photos yet. However, because I was working on the
Beer Table, I did have time to add in quite a few visits since last
June.
June 15, 2008: I've finally cleared the backlog from May, and now I have
two more hikes posted on the Day Trips page. I also
finally made a couple of additions to the Beer Table.
June 8, 2008: I'm catching up on the backlog, and today I posted pictures
of Yellowstone Lake and Devil's Lake on the
Day Trips page.
June 3, 2008: I've been pretty busy lately, but tonight I took some time away
from my after-work hikes (and social outings) to post a few photos of Governor Dodge
State Park, Blue Mound State Park, and the Brooklyn State Wildlife Area on the
Day Trips page.
April 27, 2008: I've had a chance to do a little more hiking in the last week,
and there are more pictures on the Day Trips page. There
is also one more brewpub visit in the Beer Table.
April 19, 2008: Finally it's spring, and to celebrate, I've been getting
getting early-season hiking on my schedule. Pictures from my first four Wisconsin
hikes of 2008 are located on the Day Trips page. I
also added a picture to my oft-forgotten Backyard
Views page. Check out the snow--which is finally gone!
March 7, 2008: I'm back in Madison, and the final photos from this year's
Washington trip are posted.
March 5, 2008: Finally, the Beer Table is
up to date.
March 4, 2008: Though the Beer Table is still a bit out of date, I did finally
start posting some photos from my current trip to
Washington, DC. I'm there now,
and will be through Thursday morning.
October 27, 2007: Seems I've been busy lately, but today I finally took a break
from running around Wisconsin to post some photos from five different
Day Trips, including visits to Devil's Lake, Yellowstone
Lake, Governor Dodge, and Effigy Mounds. Not surprisingly, I also had time for some brewpub
and brewery visits, and those are listed in the Beer Table.
September 23, 2007: I've been back in Madison for a couple of days, and finally
got around to posting a couple of Peace Arch photos in the
Northern Seas section. The section
has been reorganized as well--there were just too many pictures for one master page so it's been
split into a Wisconsin part and a Washington part. There is also one more brewpub visit on the
Beer Table.
September 20, 2007: Yesterday I went on an adventure to Moran State Park on
Orcas Island, and some photos from that are in the
Northern Seas section. On the
way back I stopped at the Rockfish Grill in Anacortes and sampled their IPA, and the visit
is enshrined on the Beer Table.
September 18, 2007: Today my dad and I headed to Victoria, British Columbia,
via a passenger ferry. A few pictures are in the
Northern Seas section. While
we were there, we stopped at an actual, operational Canadian brewpub located in the Swans
Hotel. That visit is of course on the Beer Table.
September 17, 2007: It was another hiking day--and this time I went into the
Mount Baker area of the Snoqualmie National Forest for some mountain hiking. There are
eight new photos in the
Northern Seas section.
September 16, 2007: Today it was time for my dad and I to make a trip to Canada,
and we went to the Hell's Gate area of the Fraser River. Four new photos are in the
Northern Seas section.
September 15, 2007: I'm now in Birch Bay, Washington, which is between
Bellingham and Blaine on the coast. I did some day hiking at Deception Pass State Park,
about 90 minutes south of here, and posted the new photos in the
Northern Seas travel section.
I also updated the Beer Table with a visit I made to South Shore
on Thursday night.
September 13, 2007: Autumn weather on Lake Superior is relatively unpredictable,
and my trip took an unexpected turn when my planned landing and hike on Sand Island was
scrubbed due to a fast-moving storm. The early return to Bayfield gave me a
chance to rest, relax, and sort through my pictures from Madeline Island yesterday, and the
stormy boat ride today. Those pictures are in the new
Northern Seas travel section.
September 12, 2007: I'm back in Bayfield after my life in Madison. No, seriously,
I really am in Bayfield, Wisconsin. I spent the day hiking on Madeline Island and the evening
hearing some ghost stories about Bayfield. Alas, I have a full day tomorrow as well, so no
pictures quite yet, but as a consolation prize I've posted my three August brewpub visits on
the Beer Table.
July 31, 2007: My friend Jason had a birthday, so we went to JT Whitney's
so he could drink for free. The visit is now enshrined in the
Beer Table.
July 30, 2007: I'm back in Madison after my trip to
Bayfield, so I just
made a couple of very minor updates to the site. Sadly I have to go back to work
tomorrow...vacation was definitely nice.
July 28, 2007: I've been visiting the National Lakeshore over the last
couple of days, taking a ferry to Stockton Island on Friday and hiking along the mainland
today. There are eight more photos in the
Bayfield section.
July 26, 2007: I took a trip to Copper Falls State Park south of Bayfield
today, and posted four pictures of some of the waterfalls in the
Bayfield section.
My new camera does a pretty good job, although some of the photos might seem a little
bit jagged because I limit the file size of photos on this site. (Nature photos tend
to not compress as well as photos of buildings or people.)
July 25, 2007: A lot has happened since my post earlier today. Thanks to
modern fulfillment and logistics, I have a new camera, so I'm all set to start taking
more pictures. Today was extremely hot, so I went into Ashland for lunch and visited
the South Shore Brewery--a place I visited 11 years ago today to start the whole
Beer Table phenomenon. I also finished posting some
Day Trips photos from earlier this year,
so the site is now more or less up to date.
July 25, 2007: Yesterday I had a chance to do something completely new for
me--a kayak trip to see the sea caves along mainland northwest of Bayfield. Those pictures
are in the
Bayfield section.
Unfortunately, my camera got a little bit waterlogged, so I'm waiting for a replacement
camera to arrive so I can continue posting new photos.
July 23, 2007: The weather was good today, so I took a trip to Raspberry Island.
I also did some walking through Bayfield, including taking a trip on the Iron Bridge Nature
Trail. It's all in my
Bayfield section.
July 22, 2007: After a long day of driving, I'm now on vacation in Bayfield,
Wisconsin. I had a brewpub stop in Marshfield, reflected in the
Beer Table, and I also began the section for my
trip on this page.
July 21, 2007: I've been neglecting my web site lately, but I'm about to leave
for vacation, so I decided to add a few photos that I've taken over the last year or so. Check
out the Day Trips section, where I've added four more hiking
adventures from late 2006. (Some 2007 adventures are yet to come.) Of course, no update would be
complete without a few changes to the Beer Table.
March 7, 2007: My trip to
Washington is drawing to a close, and
I just posted a couple of quick pictures. Today was a snowy day in the capital, so I really didn't
want to spend too much time outside. Instead, I just had lunch at Rock Bottom in the Ballston Mall,
which of course is now listed in the Beer Table.
March 6, 2007: I did a little more exploring in
Washington today, with quick visits
to Ford's Theater, the Old Post Office Pavilion, the Natural History museum, and the National
Archives. Oh, yeah, and I had dinner at the District Chophouse, the first time since 2004.
Check out the Beer Table to see.
March 5, 2007: It's been a while since I've posted any updates to my site. The
last few months have been a little rough, since one of my biggest fans--my mom--passed away at
the end of December. I've caught up with a few Beer Table
posts, finished off the
Thanksgiving 2006
page, and, now that I'm in Washington, started the
Washington 2007 page.
November 26, 2006: I'm on the road in Minnesota as I post this. Check out my
Thanksgiving 2006
page for details of my adventures. And, of course, see my visit to the August
Schell Brewing Company, chronicled in the Beer Table.
November 19, 2006: Just an addition and an update to the Gray's Tied House
URL in the Beer Table. Rumor has it that Granite City
will be opening a brewpub in Madison near West Towne Mall in less than a month, and with
the Dane opening a Hilldale location (where they won't be able to sell their own beers
until Wisconsin's "tied house" law is changed), the brewpub scene in Madison and Dane County is
actually getting pretty impressive.
November 12, 2006: It's been a really long time since I've made any updates, mostly
because there has been just a ton going on. This site is now being hosted very differently from
before, on a virtual server that I can control--rather than on a poorly-maintained server that
belonged to a going-down-the-tubes, customer-service-be-damned provider. (WebHostPlus, if you're
reading, then take this as notice that you can go to hell.) Thanks especially to the very cool
Jeremy for his help in getting my new server up
and running back in September. I've of course bought him a couple of beers, and my recent
adventures in that area are on the Beer Table.
June 28, 2006: Well, I've been back in the US for a day. I've got a few pictures
from my 48 hours in
London, which included a tour
of Westminster Abbey and a walking tour of pubs along the Thames. I even found time to visit
a brewpub on my first night in London, and of course that's in the
Beer Table. That means I visited brewpubs in three
countries on this trip.
June 24, 2006: My travels are coming to an end in
Sweden. I had an excellent time
visiting my friend Robert's mom and stepdad and celebrating a traditional Swedish
Midsummer with lots of schnapps, herring, and beer. Too bad the Swedish soccer team lost to
the Germans today, otherwise it would have been perfect!
June 22, 2006: I've posted a few photos from my first full day in
Sweden. The weather has
been cooperating quite nicely, with cooler temperatures than in Prague and only a little bit
of light drizzle.
June 20, 2006: Time flies when you're having fun, even if you're flying to have
fun. I had a whirlwind two days in
Prague, and managed to have a
few beers at a place that brews its own beer, which means another country on the
Beer Table.
June 17, 2006: There are more pictures of my time in
Japan posted, as well as an
update to the Beer Table.
June 15, 2006: Right now I'm on a trip around the world, and I finally had a chance
to settle down and post a huge number of pictures from Japan
here. There still isn't a link
from the main Travel page but that will be coming soon.
June 3, 2006: I made a quick trip to Governor Dodge State Park this evening,
and some photos can be found via the Day Trips page.
June 2, 2006: I've been making a lot of minor structural updates throughout the
site over the last couple of weeks, so hopefully nothing has broken. In addition, I've posted
an update to the Beer Table.
May 21, 2006: Major shock--I've finally caught up with my photos in the
Day Trips section, adding three new sections. I've
also updated the first two trips of 2006 with some GPS maps of my routes. If you don't see
the GPS plots right away, hit the reload button. The information in the supplements section
(right side below the navigation section) changes based on which second the page was
requested from the server.
May 20, 2006: Gradually I'm catching up on my web site updates. It's taking
a while because I'm doing a lot of behind-the-scenes work on the site to make it a little
easier to maintain. Today, I added some pictures from my
Easter trip to Minnesota,
where I did some hiking, caught a concert, and had a really nice time with my family.
May 17, 2006: I haven't made any updates in more than four months, but I've done
a few interesting things. I have some photos from my March trip to
Washington, DC posted, as well as
a couple of updates to the Beer Table. More updates are
on the way soon!
January 15, 2006: It's been way too long since I've done an update, but those
darned holidays keep getting in the way. Not surprisingly, there are updates in the
Beer Table. But, very surprisingly, there are some
January 2006 hiking updates on the Day Trips page. The
sunny and relatively warm weather (upper 30s this weekend) just made me want to get out.
October 15, 2005: Last night I went to JT Whitney's to have the Friday fish fry
(yeah, I'm a Wisconsin boy) and their Pumpkin Ale with my old college pal Jason. As usual
the visit is in the Beer Table. Also, my friend Eric is
letting me try out the photo gallery management system he uses. Links to a bunch of pictures
from my trip with him through Japan in 1998 are available in his personal pages at this
link. No clue how long
the photos will last there because he hates pictures of himself. A subset of these
photos has been available on my site for years; check out my
Japan 1998 page for photos from
a time when I was much younger and cameras were not digital.
October 4, 2005: It's rare that I make two updates in a day, but after some
deliberation (and some watermarking) I added some high-resolution images to my
New Mexico page. As you
surf the various photos, just click on the standard-sized photos (480 pixels wide) to see
the larger images (1024x768). The larger images may be up to 500K in size, so if you
have a slow connection, it's best to avoid them. Also please note that I retain copyright
to all images on this site; if you want to use my images, you need to ask. Go to
http://www.digimad.com/ to use a feedback form that
will get to me.
October 4, 2005: I've been back in Madison for a few days and have gradually
been making some changes to my
New Mexico page, including
adding some mini topo maps to a few of the photo pages. (You may have to click the reload
button to see them--the information in that area cycles quasi-randomly. Thanks also to
Adam Schneider and his GPS Visualizer
site for the great plots of my ForeRunner data.) Also, I finally cleaned up a few broken
links in the Beer Table, and filled in a few blanks between
Washington and New Mexico.
September 29, 2005: My time in New Mexico is drawing to a close, and there
is an update on the Beer Table from yesterday, and some
new pictures from today's hike in the Lincoln National Forest on my
New Mexico page.
September 29, 2005: My time in New Mexico is drawing to a close, and there
is an update on the Beer Table from yesterday, and some
new pictures from today's hike in the Lincoln National Forest on my
New Mexico page.
September 27, 2005: I visited the Alamogordo area today, including the National
Solar Observatory, Museum of Space History, and White Sands. Pictures are on my
New Mexico page.
September 26, 2005: Today was a road trip day, and I made plenty of stops,
including the Valley of Fires Recreation Area near Carrizozo, and the VLA an hour beyond
Socorro. Those photos are on the
New Mexico page. In
addition, I visited the Sierra Blanca brewery in Carrizozo (thanks to Rich Weber for the cup
of Alien Amber and tolerating me while the brew kettle boiled over...), and stopped for dinner
and an IPA at the Socorro Springs brewpub in Soccoro. Those visits are on the
Beer Table.
September 25, 2005: Today I went back to the same area of the Lincoln National
Forest for a longer hike that was a bit more scenic than just going down a mountain.
It was definitely fun. Pictures have been added to my
New Mexico page.
September 24, 2005: Though I'm still in recovery (strange how disc injuries
don't want to heal that quickly...), I'm now on vacation. Until September 30, I'll
be in New Mexico, specifically the area around Ruidoso. Today I did a little bit of
mountain hiking and started to get a nice feel for the general area. Though I don't
have the links off the main travel page yet (my version of the Gimp doesn't work and
downloading one over a slow modem would take forever), you can see what I'm up to by clicking
on this link to my
New Mexico page.
July 31, 2005: After spending the last few months dealing with a blown
disc that just wouldn't heal properly, I'm back...no pun intended. Word of advice:
watch for roots on the Potomac Heritage Trail. In celebration of my (more or less)
return to health after an epidural steroid injection, I've updated that horrible
picture of me on the About page,
which I'm sure no one usually visits anyway. Yeah, the hair is really mine. No real
danger of male pattern baldness here. Keep clicking the "reload" button on
your browser until you get a survey form, and then you can tell me what to do with it
anonymously.
March 2, 2005: I've finally started posting some photos from my trip to
Washington. Cold, windy
weather has made this year's travels a bit more indoor-oriented than last year's, but
there are photos from Roosevelt Island, night photography of some of the monuments,
and some photos from the Air & Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles Airport.
February 28, 2005: It's been forever since I've updated my web site it seems.
However, I've finally got some more pictures online. Check out the
Chicago 2005 pages, which
have some highlights of my trip to the Windy City earlier this month. As usual, there
are always updates to the Beer Table. And, watch this
space for more updates. I'm traveling in Washington DC this week for the USSYAA!
July 29, 2004: Last week, I had a great little vacation that took me to both
Las Vegas and
Northern California, and of course there are some pictures available. As usual, I took
a couple of detours and visited some brewpubs, and those visits are on the
Beer Table.
July 7, 2004: Though it may appear to be the case, I haven't quite fallen off
the edge of the world yet. I have a huge backlog of day trip pictures to format, but in the
meantime, I've posted the latest five brew pub visits to the
Beer Table.
May 6, 2004: I've been back from Florida for a few days, but there are no new
pictures. There is, however, one new addition to the
Beer Table.
April 29, 2004: I'm back from a mini-getaway to Key West, and photos are on my
Florida page. Also check
out the additions to the Beer Table.
April 27, 2004: I'm traveling again, and this time I'm visiting South
Florida. With trips to
Lake Okeechobee, the Everglades, and Jonathan Dickinson State Park, I've been putting
the miles on the rental car!
March 7, 2004: I've been back in Madison for a couple of days, but I finally took the
time to add the final four photos to the
Washington DC 2004 section. I also
visited the Capitol City Brewing Company restaurant next to Union Station one last time, and
that visit is of course on the Beer Table.
March 2, 2004: There are more pictures in the
Washington DC 2004 section, featuring
some photos from both the District and Alexandria. I've also been visiting a number of brewpubs,
and those visits are on the Beer Table.
February 29, 2004: There are a huge number of updates to the
Washington DC 2004 section after I hit
most of the major memorials and historic sites in western Washington and eastern Arlington. To
wrap up more than five hours of walking in the warm sun, I stopped at the Rock Bottom Brewery in
Arlington, and that visit is on the Beer Table.
February 28, 2004: I'm in Washington DC, and I've started a photo gallery in my
Washington DC 2004 section. As always,
I'm in search of beer, and I've started visiting my favorite haunts and the list continues to
grow on the Beer Table.
February 15, 2004: Last weekend I headed to Chicago, and took a couple of pictures
at the Field Museum. That's in my
Chicago 2004 section. And,
since I was in Illinois anyway, I put a few visits on the Beer Table.
December 31, 2003: One last quick update to the
California 2003 section
before the end of 2003. Look for "Crazy Uncle Dave" in the navigation section.
December 31, 2003: I have more photos on the
California 2003 pages, as well
as another brewpub visit on the Beer Table.
December 28, 2003: I'm on vacation, this time in northern California and
the San Francisco Bay area. Pictures from the trip are located in their own section
here, and of course
I've added a couple of brewpub visits on the Beer Table.
November 9, 2003: Lots of updates today, including yet another Devil's Lake
visit on the Day Trips page. I also spent this past weekend
in Door County, and that gets its own set of pages
here. And, finally,
I was able to catch up on a few brewpub visits and put them on the
Beer Table.
October 12, 2003: Finally I've caught up with the
Day Trips page, adding in my four most
recently photographed hikes--Wyalusing, Devil's Lake, Harrington Beach, and Yellowstone
Lake.
October 11, 2003: The weather has been cooling off, so the hiking gets a little
bit easier--no stressing out with 90-degree weather. I've posted a few more photos on the
Day Trips page, with two back-to-back trips
to Devil's Lake plus a trip to the Ice Age Trail south of Watertown. (There are still more
photos to come for some of my October hikes.) Also, there's an update on the
Beer Table.
September 14, 2003: After a couple of days of rain, it finally cleared up
and I was able to take a nice hike at Governor Dodge State Park. Sorry, no photos for
the Day Trip page, but I did stop at the Grumpy Troll in Mount Horeb, and that's on
the Beer Table.
September 13, 2003: More rain meant I could finally finish up my backlog of
photos for the Day Trips page. The updates
include trips through September 7 of this year.
September 12, 2003: No hiking tonight because it finally rained after what seems
like two months. That meant that I was able to get four more trips posted on the
Day Trips page. Check out my July trips
to Wyalusing, Mirror Lake, Roche-a-Cri, and Mill Bluff State Parks.
September 9, 2003: Gradually I'm catching up on posting photos on the
Day Trips page. I'm caught up through
July 12's adventures now.
September 7, 2003: It's slow going since I spend so much of my free time hiking
and enjoying the great outdoors, but there's another visit on the
Day Trip page. Also there are
a couple more updates to the Beer Table.
August 3, 2003: I'm slowly catching up on posting some of my hiking photos
from this summer on the
Day Trip pages.
August 2, 2003: My updates have been sporadic lately, because I haven't been
spending an awful lot of time at home lately. Check out the latest pub visits on the
Beer Table. On the
Day Trip front, I've also been
quite active, and it's been tough finding the time to actually post photos. At least
there are now some pictures in there from June!
July 3, 2003: After a couple of days offline, I'm back. The story is long and
rather sordid, but basically my previous web host, which was on the edge anyway, finally
bit the dust, due entirely to human factors. I'm with a new host now. Family members, please
contact me at my digimad.com address for revised instructions for getting your e-mail.
May 26, 2003: I'm back in Madison after the trip around
Lake Superior, and I've
reorganized the photos a little bit and added twelve photos from the Michigan leg of
the trip. I've finally added the proper links from the main
Travel page, and in the Michigan
stage of the trip we visited some brewpubs which are, of course, on the
Beer Table.
May 22, 2003: The trip around
Lake Superior continued
today, with the drive from Wawa to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, occurring in the morning.
I've added four more pictures of the drive and some of our time in Sault.
May 21, 2003: Still no link from the main travel page, but my
Lake Superior 2003 vacation
section has eight new photos from Pukaskwa National Park and the greater Wawa area.
May 20, 2003: Right now I'm in Canada on a Lake Superior Circle Tour vacation.
Finally I'm at a motel that has a decent enough phone connection so that I can post photos,
and you can see them here.
Unfortunately I haven't yet had a chance to build the images for the link from the main
travel page, but at least you can check out the pictures while I'm still traveling!
May 4, 2003: The weather in Wisconsin was great yesterday, and to celebrate
I paid a visit to
Devil's Lake State Park,
which is the most-visited state park in Wisconsin.
April 13, 2003: Now that the weather is finally getting better, I decided
to head out and visit a couple of Wisconsin state parks this weekend. On Saturday, I
visited Harrington Beach,
and on Sunday I visited
Wyalusing. Since it's
still very early in the spring, there was a lot more brown than green in the woods,
but it was still great to get out and enjoy the parks.
March 23, 2003: This week my domains were in propagation, and finally it
appears that my pages are being viewed from the new server. In the meantime, there was
also a small update to the Beer Table.
March 13, 2003: It was brewpub week with my friend Jason--we hit
J.T. Whitney's on March 9, and went to the Delafield Brewhaus on the way to the
Coldplay concert in Milwaukee on March 12. As usual it's on the
Beer Table.
March 9, 2003: On March 3 I took a couple more photos on my last morning in
Washington, DC.
March 2, 2003: Though there aren't too many photos, I've added a new
Washington DC 2003
section to the web site. And, of course, there are a couple of updates to the
Beer Table.
February 27, 2003: Greetings from the District of Columbia! I got hungry tonight
so I went to Capitol City Brewing by Union Station--it's on the
Beer Table, along with last
week's visit to J.T. Whitney's for Friday fish and a growler of Black Diamond Porter.
February 15, 2003: I paid a repeat visit to the new Great Dane on January 31
but forgot to post it. It's on the
Beer Table. Also, be sure to check out
what Dean & Brenna Zavadsky are up to at
http://www.zavadsky.net/dean/.
January 26, 2003: Added an update to the
Beer Table. Yes, I finally
made it to the new Great Dane location in Fitchburg. There are now two brewpubs within
four miles of my house!
December 15, 2002: Just a minor update to the
Beer Table.
December 4, 2002: Finished off the
California 2002 pages
with pictures from Sonoma County, San Francisco, and Alcatraz. Also, the
Beer Table has its final updates
from the California tour!
November 30, 2002: Added more pictures to the
California 2002 pages
from a quick trip I made to the coast.
November 28, 2002: More pictures on the
California 2002 pages,
this time from a mini-tour of some Napa Valley wineries.
November 27, 2002: I'm on vacation again, this time in California.
Check out my progress on the
California 2002 pages. And,
what good would a vacation be without a couple of brewpub visits? Check those out in the
Beer Table.
November 17, 2002: Added some photos from
Lake Kegonsa State Park
to the Day Trips section.
November 10, 2002: Added a trip to the
Browntown-Cadiz Springs
Recreational Area to the Day Trips section. Also added a few new photos to
my Backyard Views section.
October 19, 2002: A few more brew visits from last weekend on the
Beer Table.
October 6, 2002: Brief mention of the Quivey's Grove Beer Fest on the
Beer Events page
September 15, 2002: Minor update to the
Beer Table.
September 1, 2002: Who said this web site wasn't any work? I've added
a new major section to the site to cover my assorted
Day Trips throughout the state. I've moved
the Harrington Beach and New Glarus Woods trips from Travels to Day Trips, and I've added
photos from Rocky Arbor State Park, Yellowstone Lake State Park, Effigy Mounds National
Monument, and Aztalan State Park to the Day Trips section. Enjoy!
August 25, 2002: Before going to a Brewer game on August 20, I went
to the Delafield Brewhaus for a beer and a burger, and that means an update to the
Beer Table. Late in the day,
I also made some changes to navigation for the main sections--I switched from words to
icons.
August 20, 2002: I stopped at the Grumpy Troll on the way back from
Effigy Mounds National Monument on August 18, and the brew visit is on the
Beer Table. I plan to get
the photos from Effigy Mounds online as part of a minor site redesign.
August 10, 2002: One more addition to the
Beer Table as well as some
behind-the-scenes changes to site's meta tags. Also a few changes to the photo
algorithm for this page to choose even more pictures from the site.
July 29, 2002: I've posted the final photos and made some organizational
changes to the
Parks & Pubs
section. Yes, I'm back in Madison now!
July 27, 2002: There's a lot to see and do in South Dakota, and I barely
scratched the surface in the latest updates to the
Parks & Pubs
section.
July 26, 2002: Bighorn National Forest and Devils Tower are the
new highlights in the Parks & Pubs
section. Also don't forget to check out the Beer Table
for the latest visits on the pub tour!
July 25, 2002: No brewpubs today, but a great return to Yellowstone where
I saw mud pots, hot springs, bison, and lots of tourists. Check it out in the
Parks & Pubs section.
July 24, 2002: I managed to get an Internet connection from Bozeman,
Montana, and I've posted pictures from the Pinedale, WY area, as well as Grand Teton
and Yellowstone National Parks in the
Parks & Pubs section.
July 22, 2002: Not too many updates today. Check out the travel section
for pictures from downtown Denver--including two brewing operations!
July 21, 2002: A full day at Rocky Mountain National Park yielded an
unbelievable number of pictures in the travel section. Check it out!
July 20, 2002: More material from Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and
the vicinity of Denver, Colorado, in the
Parks & Pubs 2002 section.
July 18, 2002: New stuff in the travel section and on the beer
table--I'm on a road trip!
July 17, 2002: Created a new home page. Click on the photo for
a semi-random link to a travel page!
